Star TribuneOne of St. Paul’s Best Patios Just Got Better
Over at Patrick McGovern’s, one of St. Paul’s best patios just got better. Last week, it debuted a new retractable roof. And this is no rinky-dink roof, either. The stone patio is now fully enclosed — like a shimmering glass house erected with wide steel beams. Here’s the cool part: The…
Star TribuneExpanding Patio Season with Cabreeze™
Patrick McGovern’s co-owner Pat Boemer said the pub’s planned Cabreeze™ would extend its patio season from three-plus months to eight or nine months a year while providing space for crowds from the nearby Xcel Energy Center.

With UV protection, a retractable roof, a 90-mph wind rating, and the ability to withstand heavy snow loads, the Cabreeze™ can hack whatever weather Minnesota can muster … It is affectionately known as the ‘snow globe’ and ‘Lake Elmo’s newest chapel.’
Star TribuneA Game-Changer for Patrick McGovern’s Patio
Lake Elmo Inn chef-owner John Schiltz said his Cabreeze™ enabled him to seat 1,000 extra diners during the holidays and 500 extra during Valentine’s weekend in his 35-seat patio, which he previously covered with a temporary tent. His family celebrated Christmas in the Cabreeze™, which he heats to operate year-round.

The main benefit of the Cabreeze™ is that I don’t have to study the weather every day before we open the patio. Our restaurant is so popular, if I gambled wrong with the weather, I’d have nowhere to put those people.

Year-to-date we’re up 12% and, in August, up more than 20% over last year which is the first time in 30 years of business we’ve had that high of monthly increase!

John Schiltz, owner of the Lake Elmo Inn, has always had good patio business, but with the addition of a Cabreeze™ structure, he can now cash in on this business year-round.

We heard about the ‘snow globe’ from John talking about it on the radio and came over for our first time from Minneapolis. We love it!

We used to have a tent on our patio and no matter how we dressed it up it was still a tent. Our Cabreeze™ is not only functional, but it looks fantastic and adds to the character of our building.

In December we seated over 1,000 additional guests ($50,000+ additional revenue) on our patio. Living in Minnesota I never thought I would be able to say that.

How much does a retractable roof system cost?
Costs depend on project size, span width, materials, engineering needs, and installation requirements. Commercial retractable roof systems are typically priced by the square foot. We provide accurate estimates after reviewing drawings, site conditions, and project goals.
Do you design both residential and commercial retractable roof systems?
We design and manufacture commercial retractable roofs for restaurants, hotels, event venues, community pools, retirement communities, rooftop spaces, and shared residential properties. Single-family residential pools are handled by our partner, Covers in Play.
What is included in a Cabrio retractable roof system?
Our standard systems include engineered steel columns, steel headers, aluminum mullions, and clear glazing in polycarbonate or glass. Each project also includes custom design, structural engineering, and full permitting support. We offer two system styles. Our enclosure-style option connects the roof and walls, giving the space a lighter structural footprint without steel columns and headers. Our structured option keeps the roof and walls separate with steel supports, which allows stronger control over weather conditions through our patented design.
How long does it take to design and install a retractable roof system?
Project timelines vary by complexity, city requirements, engineering reviews, and fabrication schedules. Larger commercial projects often involve design, approvals, and installation phases. We outline the full timeline once we understand the project scope.
Do your retractable roof systems meet local snow and wind load requirements?
Yes. Every structure is engineered for the required regional loads. This allows year-round operation in colder climates, coastal environments, and areas with higher structural demands.
What is the difference between single-stack and multi-stack retractable roofs?
Single-stack roofs slide into one section and work well for moderate openings. Multi-stack roofs slide into several sections and are ideal for long spans, wide restaurant patios, aquatic centers, community facilities, and rooftop environments.
Can retractable roofs be paired with opening wall systems?
Yes. We integrate folding walls, sliding walls, frameless panels, and vertical wall systems to create flexible indoor-to-outdoor spaces. Roof and wall systems can operate independently or together.
What types of spaces benefit most from retractable roofs and opening walls?
Restaurants, hotels, event venues, rooftop patios, aquatic centers, community pools, sports and recreation facilities, retirement communities, and multi-family amenities often see strong results from year-round usable space.
What glazing options do you offer for retractable roofs and walls?
We offer clear multiwall polycarbonate and laminated glass. Both provide clarity, UV protection, and strong structural performance. We recommend the right material based on climate, aesthetics, and operational needs.
Can you customize a retractable roof system for complex or unusual spaces?
Yes. We specialize in custom engineering and design for unique layouts, rooftops, multi-level structures, tight footprints, and architect-driven projects. Our team reviews building plans, site conditions, and operational needs to create a retractable roof system that fits seamlessly into the space.
How can I get started on a retractable roof project?
You can request an estimate or reach out through our contact form. Share your project type, dimensions, and goals, and we’ll guide you through the next steps. Our team works closely with business owners, architects, and contractors throughout the entire process.
